Applying to graduate school in the Department of Integrative Biology

Funding

The Department of Integrative Biology offers tuition remittance for all graduate students (PhD and Masters) with 5 years of guaranteed funding for PhDs and two years for masters students. Salary information and more information about funding can be found at the OSU graduate school website: https://gradschool.oregonstate.edu/finance
Graduate students in our lab group often receive external funding to support research costs and/or stipend requirements from the following programs (links to individual programs included):
·         National Science Foundation Graduate Research Program (GRFP)
·         Hatfield Marine Science Center Mamie Markham Research Fellowship
·         NOAA Nancy Foster Fellowship
·         Ford Fellowship https://sites.nationalacademies.org/pga/fordfellowships/index.htm
Fellowships are an excellent way to support your graduate work as they allow you to focus on your own work without worrying about other research or teaching commitments.
All graduate students are required to teach for 2 (masters student) or 3 (PhD) terms as a degree requirement at OSU. Typically, graduate students in our lab teach Introductory Biology and may also TA BI 450, a field based marine science course based at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Spring term. The Department of Integrative Biology has a strong teaching presence at OSU; other TA opportunities in course development or teaching Anatomy and Physiology, Science and Policy, and other courses are available.
Typically, summer funding is supported by Bruce as it is our busiest field season.

Application

The Department of Integrative Biology accepts graduate students to work specifically with mentors and is not a rotation-based program. If you are interested in working in our lab, the first step is to reach out to Bruce with a brief description of your research interests. Typically, this process begins in the late summer/early fall one year before you would potentially begin graduate study. More information about the OSU application and admissions process can be found on our department website: https://ib.oregonstate.edu/future-graduates
Your initial email to Bruce should include a brief description of your research interests, previous research experience, and a copy of your CV.

Additional Resources

We have provided this brief addendum to Bruce’s information for prospective students in order to help demystify the graduate school application process. This topic has been written on extensively by a number of academics and advisors; we have collated some of their excellent work here to serve as a jumping off point for your research and to highlight some key cultural norms and expectations in the graduate school application process. If you have additional questions, please feel free to reach out to the graduate students (contact information and information about us is located at https://www.lubchencomengelab.com/graduate-students.html)
