I'm a sustainability-minded sophomore majoring in Environmental Science. As an
URSA student, I'm studying the effects of physical treatments for large predator accessibility in rocky tidal communities at Yachats Beach in an effort to suggest resilience methods for Pisaster ochraceus, a keystone species degraded by sea star wasting disease.

I was a volunteer in the Menge-Lubchenco lab for nearly four years and I have had the opportunity to help design and work on multiple projects. In 2017, I was awarded the SURE research grant. I studied paternity in sea stars under the mentorship of Bruce Menge and Felipe Barreto. In 2018, I was employed by PISCO as an undergraduate research technician. I am now persuing a Ph.D. in the Barreto lab at OSU.

I am currently a Zoology senior with a Marine Biology & Ecology focus and minor. I have been awarded SURE funding for Summer 2019 and am excited to work on a project exploring the role of other predator species (such as the whelk Nucella ostrina and six-armed sea star Leptasterias spp.) filling the niche role of P. ochraceus by limiting the spread of M. californianus in intertidal systems.

I am a first-year student majoring in Marine Biology. Under the URSA Grant, I am studying whether barnacles facilitate recruitment of mussel larvae in the intertidal ecosystem after the loss of their main predator species, Pisaster ochraceus.

I am currently a freshman studying biology with a marine biology option. I recieved an URSA grant to work on a project investigating how predation on sea stars by birds has an effect on the rocky intertidal community. I'm also involved in other projects pertaining to sea star wasting disease in the Menge lab.

Derek Yau

My name is Derek Yau, and I'm currently a freshman. I am helping the Menge Lab by processing biomass samples from the intertidal and dissecting and measuring mussels to assess their growth over time at our field sites.
